As our friends, family, and neighbors are struggling with hunger during this pandemic, organizations like the Food Bank of Northern Indiana need our donations now more than ever. And once again, our members and allies in the community stepped up during this overwhelming time of need.

We’d had several successful fundraising events where we provided hand sanitizer and health-care packages to people who are homeless and a monetary donation to La Casa De Amistad to stock its food pantry, but we weren’t done yet. The NIA board once again committed to matching the first $500 in donations from our community for The Food Bank. Normally, The Food Bank can turn a $1.00 donation into three meals; when donors participated in our matching fundraiser, the impact of each $1.00 was doubled to buy six meals. That goes a long way in providing food and comfort to families in our community who are struggling to put food on their tables.

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana serves the counties of Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph in Northern Indiana. It has a network of more than 170 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers, and daycare centers. On top of all that, The Food Bank and its distribution volunteers have been operating bonus drive-through distribution sites just to make sure everyone in need has access to food during this pandemic.

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana actively partners with local and national manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, food growers, packers, and brokers to procure food. In addition, businesses, organizations, and individuals conduct food and funding drives.

In 2019, the Food Bank of Northern Indiana distributed more than 8.8 million pounds of food to its network of 150 member agencies in its six-county service area. Today, nearly 13% of the residents of Northern Indiana are food insecure—they don't know when they will eat their next meal.

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana is a member of Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Feeding America is a powerful and efficient network of 200 food banks across the country.  As food insecurity rates hold steady at the highest national levels ever, the Feeding America network of food banks has risen to meet the need, feeding 46 million people at risk of hunger, including 12 million children and 7 million seniors.
