The board of directors at Northern Indiana Atheists met to talk about how we could help with COVID-19 relief efforts. We decided the best way to help would be to pool our resources and assist in raising money for other local organizations that are already doing great work. We chose to support La Casa De Amistad as our first community resource because of its important work empowering the Latino/Hispanic communities in the Michiana area. In addition to providing educational, cultural, and advocacy services, during the COVID-19 pandemic it is operating a weekly food pantry that has seen four times as many people as normal.

The La Casa de Amistad food pantry provides dry/nonperishable goods to our local community, made possible through donations like ours. Depending on availability, it is also able to provide fresh produce, bread, eggs, milk, and frozen meats.

Beyond providing healthy food items, La Casa De Amistad connects community members with many other resources that range from hosting the Health Department and giving free flu shots to uninsured families to signing up families with children to receive free books from the Imagination Library. Qualifying community members visit once a month.

The NIA board committed to matching the first $500 in donations from our community. And it took only six hours for our members and friends to help us meet the matching goal! NIA wants to thank the donors for their quick and generous contributions. You’ve shown again and again that atheists and our allies are some of the most compassionate people. Thank you again for helping us help families in our community who are struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic.

Our first event for the Secular Week of Action on May 1 was a 24-hour push for this fundraiser. In all, we raised a total of $1,385 for this incredibly important resource in the community. To learn more about La Casa De Amistad, you can visit www.lacasadeamistad.org.
