August 2019 NIA Newsletter

As the summer is drawing to a close Northern Indiana Atheists is wrapping up a fun and exciting spring/summer of community events and activism. In July we showed our support to the LGBTQ+ communities of Goshen and Fort Wayne and had a blast being there as always. Earlier in the month we attended both South Bend and Goshen’s Lights for Liberty candlelight vigils held to speak out against the horrific abuses against immigrants and asylum seekers at the southern border. NIA supplied posters for these events. As part of NIA’s commitment to the betterment of our community we recognize the value of caring for our planet so we have adopted a highway on SR 23 in Granger. On Sunday the 14th of July we got up early in the morning and started working to clean it up. We picked up three large bags of trash along the two mile stretch of road. On July 19th we tabled at the Goshen courthouse as an atheist organization with equal access to a public space. Thank you to all who stopped by to see us this month. Also thank you to all who came out to see us at our beer and coffee events.

Northern Indiana Atheists had the wonderful opportunity to once again experience the generous love and support of our members and broader community when the fundraiser for the Whole Women’s Health Alliance (WWHA) reached over $2,000. With your donations we were able to immediately purchase umbrellas, bottled water, noise machines, sunscreen, a cooler, ice packs, and chairs. Not only that, the fundraiser made it possible for us to purchase items for individual care packages for the patients as they come to the clinic. NIA board members will be getting together to assemble each of these packages. Finally, your donations to this fundraiser will be used to continue to support the volunteers and patients at WWHA.

Here’s what’s happening in August. On August 2nd stop by and see us at First Friday’s in Goshen. We will have a table set up as well as a fun, interactive game for the kids. August first through the 15th is our back-to-school fundraiser with Five Below in Goshen, Elkhart, and Mishawaka. Get your school supplies at a great price and help NIA at the same time. Don’t forget to bring in a flyer or print one off from our Facebook page. On August 15th we would love to have a beer with you at the Goshen Brewing Company and a cup of coffee with you on August 21st at the Bigbby coffee shop on CR 17 in Elkhart. Finally, on August 26th we will be at IUSB in South Bend for their Welcome Back Fair.
